A Person of Mystery (Episode 2)

“From out of the clear blue of the western sky comes Sky King!” Another TV program I enjoyed watching as a young child was “Sky King.” Similar to the “Lone Ranger”, “Sky King” was originally a radio program which aired from 1946 through 1954. In 1951, the TV program ran along with the radio airing until 1954. The television show aired first on NBC, then on ABC, and ran until 1962. “Sky King” was based on a real-life person, Jack Cones, the Flying Constable of Twenty-nine Palms, during the 1930s. It is a story about an Arizona rancher and airplane Pilot, named Schuyler “Sky” King who lives on “Flying Crown Ranch” near the fictional town of “Grover,” Arizona, with his niece, “Penny” and his nephew, “Clipper” who are also pilots, but still relatively inexperienced. There are also a ranch foreman, a neighbor and a sheriff on the show.

What appealed to me, and to all the kids who tuned into the show (I think), was seeing Sky King fly his trusty twin-engine Cessna 310B plane, named “Songbird” and vicariously flying alongside with him on his countless adventures, capturing “bad guys” and finding lost hikers. As a kid, and even now, I would love to fly. As a kid, I thought Sky King had the best job ever! As an adult, I flew on many plane flights to many destinations. I even flew in a small plane, much like “Songbird.” But, how would it feel like flying without a plane? This question brought me to my best experience of feeling like I was actually flying. I flew in a helium balloon (twice). Seeing birds flying right along next to me, feeling the breeze on my face and looking down at the tree tops and the traffic on Route 9, in Hadley-Amherst, with only the occasional burst of helium to keep the balloon flying, was a thrillingly serial, yet peaceful feeling. It was “another level” feeling.

Father, Son and Holy Spirit 2

Knowing that “Sky King” was based on a real-life person made the TV show extra special. But, I either don’t remember or never found out what happened to the parents of Sky King’s niece and nephew but, I guess. I didn’t have to know in order to enjoy the adventure show. Knowing the story behind the story helps to appreciate it more. It is even more important to know the story behind the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a real Person. He is not just “the Spirit in the Sky” who I’m going to go to “when I lay me down to die” as Norman Greenbaum’s 1969-70 one-time hit song says. The Holy Spirit is the Third Person in the Trinity. The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Triune God (Godhead).

Several New Testament Scriptures show us the Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Triune God is still a mystery too difficult to wrap my finite mind around. However, the following Scriptures do help me have some idea of who The Holy Spirit is because God has given me the faith to believe in a God in Three Persons Who is too BIG for me to totally comprehend.

WHO is the Holy Spirit in relation to the Trinity?

“As soon as Jesus [the Son] was baptized, He went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and He saw the Spirit of God [the Holy Spirit] descending like a dove and lighting on Him. And a voice from heaven [the Father] said, ‘This is My Son, Whom I love; with Whom I am well pleased’” (Matthew 3:16-17).

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).

“And I [Jesus] will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him or knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you” (John 14:16-17).

“God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you see and hear” (Acts 2:32-33). [Peter is talking to a large crowd and tells them the Holy Spirit’s power in raising Jesus from the dead is the same power by which the disciples have, as they speak with boldness about Jesus‘ death and resurrection.]

“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all” (II Corinthians 13:14).

WHO is the Holy Spirit in relation to the Son?

Christ's SpiritJesua, heart, sand

“Because you are sons [and daughters], God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit Who calls out, ‘Abba, Father’” (Galatians 4:6).

“Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance” (Philippians 1:19).

OT SCROOLS

“Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searching intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things” (I Peter 1:10-12).

componance of a person

WHO is the Holy Spirit in relation to being a Person?

The Person of the Holy Spirit has a mind, a will and emotions:

“And He Who searches our hearts knows the MIND of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will” (Romains 8:27).

“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit…All these are the work of the one and the same Spirit, and He gives them to each one, just as HE DETERMINES” (Romans 12:4 and 11).

“And do not GRIEVE the Holy Spirit of God, with Whom you were sealed for the day of redemption…Be kind and compassionate to one another, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:30 and 32).

“In all their distress He too was distressed,
And the angel of His presence saved them.
In His love and mercy He redeemed them;
He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.
Yet they rebelled and GRIEVED His Holy Spirit.”
(Isaiah 63:9-10a)
